excuses....excuses...excuses....

Okay …in the past six weeks I blew up the hard drive of my laptop….decided to look for a new job….had connectivity unavailability due to technical difficulties beyond my control…spent an inordinate amount of time riding the ACE Train….and then (no kidding) blew up the hard drive of a SECOND laptop…

I have become alarmingly familiar with the Blue Screen of Death which in my mind is accompanied by Darth Vader’s theme score …
(hum along with me... dun-dun-dun duh-duh-dun duh-duh-dun…)

Thankfully I know of a talented and wonderful man who managed to retrieve all of my files…including my pictures….for a not so small fee....now all I have to do is buy a new laptop. Not the best time financially to be laying out this kind of bank. Being the technosnob that I am…I want a really good laptop with some of the bells and whistles…and I want to research-adnauseum the entire process.

Since Thanksgiving my three kids (SugarCookie, LittleMissy, and the BearCub) and my Mama have all gotten new HP Laptops…not the same one…but all HP. I had a hand in all but SugarCookie’s acquisition (she is by far a bigger geek than I…her father and BOTH her grandfather’s are engineers…and her J-Boy is rather brilliant as well.) So chances are pretty good I’m gonna go HP.

Whatdayathink…?????

I want the Intel Centrino….
(trust me….I know what I’m talkin’ about)

15 inch? 17 inch?
(size really does matter)

Do I want something I can easily slip into my bag?
(or is this a really good excuse to get a new bag?)

2-gig HD or 3-gig HD?
(they both have the 250 memory)

Do I really want the ten-key on the keyboard?
(numbers girl that I am)

Why the e-ph can’t I get one WITHOUT the webcam?
(there is no way I am chatting with the Teamster at 4am via webcam)

What about blue-ray capability?
(J-boy says Blue Ray is the only way)

Black keys? Silver Keys?
(I have light vision issues…so probably black….)

Do I really want the AT&T Smart Card?
(I do….but can I afford it?)

Anybody want to weigh in with an opinion of two???

The ten key adds a lot of extra size (and weight) to that laptop. My old on had it. It is a nice feature, but it made it way too bulky for my taste.

Best of luck in finding one ya like. :)

I know you will make all the right decisions here. I just know it. I've missed you too. Was thinking about you yesterday and wondered if you and quit blogging or were just taking a break. Have a great weekend. :)

You know I'm about as computer savvy as a bar of soap, so I don't think I'll be a lot of help to you. My only advise would be to buy as much machine as you can comfortably afford.

Great to see you back in action!

Great to see you! As a Christmas gift, a relative got me a Toshiba Satellite with 17" screen and Intel Centrino. It is more than I ever thought I would be able to call my own. I absolutely love this laptop.

Well, I could tell you that all of the HPs that I've owned or my friends have owned have all been crap, so we all switched to Dell, but it seems you've already made your mind.

I bought my new laptop with a "downgrade" of Windows XP Home - we decided to forgo Vista since we've heard horror stories.

Tech ijit that I am, you lost me at HP.

You know how I bought my laptop? I went to the Dell website, saw the special on the first page, and clicked the purchase button.

OK...I did a little research. But I still went with the special because it had what I needed.

As for the 10-key feature, I got used to the numbers across the top of the keyboard pretty quickly. But then my laptop is used for writing with very little spreadsheets or other number requirements.

<----likes her HP laptop

And is just so darn tickled to have you back!
(didn't hound ya this time...LOL....well, not MUCH--figured it was a busy moment in time)

Yep, blue ray.
Yep, ten key.
Yep---might WANNA use a webcam at some point in time. There IS an 'off' button, yaknow....
Yep, 15 inch. (17 messes with my privacy for some reason.....)
(..get a new bag! LOL)
And heck if I know about the AT&T thingy. LOL

*doing happy dance*
And yeah for smart people who salvage lost things!

I have a HP and I love it. Go with the bigger screen. I have a 17 incher, and a big screen as well. Cheers!!

First off, welcome back! I was seriously beginning to worry! If the trip that I am contemplating out to sunny California in May comes to fruition I am hoping to get the chance to meet you in real life versus virtual but I can't do that if you've dropped off the edge of the Blogosphere!

I'd love a new laptop as I have literally worn the letters off of the keyboard of my current one from overuse but alas, not in the realm of financial possibilities right now. I'd say definitely go with the Blue-Ray and get the 17" because you're absolutely right in that size DOES matter! Besides, it's a great excuse for a snazzy new bag, too!

I am so sorry about your laptops Katherine what a bummer! Hope you enjoy your new one a long long time!! :D

Just got my iMac....

I will just say... the new MacBook Air...is way freakin' cool

a laptop so thin it fits in a manila envelope. The new machine features a full-size keyboard and LED-backlit 13.3-inch display with built-in iSight, and the new larger trackpad supports multi-touch gestures. Just like the iPhone, you'll be able to pan around, pinch to zoom, and rotate with two fingers, and move windows with a flick. Apple got the size down by using the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive that's in the iPod classic, but you'll be able to order a 64GB SSD as an option.

why is it that only the female bloggers claimed that "size does matter"? I saw 4 people on the plane Thursday watching movies on a little 3 inch ipod (come on...3 inches?)

and the web cam at 4 am? I'm walking out the door at 4:07....we could web-cam at 3:40 a.m. (I'd have to upgrade)

and you know how f@#king cool the ATT smart card is....riding shotgun down the highway looking up traffic reports, movies, directions, blogs...can you live without it once you've had it?

I like the ACE train.....

Silver keys would drive me crazy I think. I hope you make the right decision. Did you lose all your files when your hard drive went?

And also....

You've been royally tagged by the Queen of Memes. Message In a Bottle Meme
Hope you like it!

Just hoping everything is okay over there.... drop us a line and tell us you won the lottery and are busy sending us checks. That would be good. I hope it's something like that.

Katherine, oh Katherine, wherefore art thou, Katherine? I hope that all is well over on your side of the country!

In an effort to drag you back out into the Blogosphere, I have tagged you for a new meme over on my blog! Hope you can play, it would be lovely to see you around again!

I wanna be on the "hurry back" list. Sorry you've been having problems. I had trouble with my server and my own issues, so I've been out, too.
I have a Sony Vaio and like it better than the Acer I had before.
I had a little extra to splurge with at the time, so got the best I could, figuring it would be a heck of a long time before I could get another.
The best advice is to get the best you can - and yes, I was on the internet reading and reading and reading until I was totally confused!
Hope you're well....
~~~Blessings~~~
You can always add the wireless mouse and a keyboard with 10 key later.
The question is, how portable do you want it? If you are a road warrior, the smaller, lighter, the better. If most of the mobility consists of computing from the living room with the router in the bed room, the go as big as you like.
Personally, I have a Tobshia 13.3 that I really love. But I take it to and from work every day. My primary home unit is a desktop with a 22" widescreen. And yes, if your doing graphics, size matters....alot!!!
