I am Orange Irish.
I wear Orange on St Patrick's Day...and if you try to pinch me for not wearing green....I have the right to pinch you back ten times.
"Orange Irish" means to be Irish and Protestant...as opposed to Catholic. Most Orange Irish have British lineage....but not all...not by a long shot.
Many of the Irish citizens who came to the United States wore orange scarves around their necks in honor of King Billy. (You may know him as William of Orange...who defeated Catholic King James in Ireland in 1690) The immigrants were known as "orangemen" and "billyboys" from the various ballads they brought with them to the New World. Since many of them settled in the hill country of Appalachia and the Ozarks...they became known as "Hillbilly's"
(by the way....also the reason the Tennessee Vols colors are ORANGE and white.)

Very cool! I didn't know any of that.
Happy MM!
My father was born in Scotland and was raised in the "Free Church" ... in other words not Church of England and DEFINITELY NOT Catholic.
He didn't take the prejudices seriously except on St. Patrick's Day when he always wore an Orange Bow Tie.
I just gave you an award :)
I never knew such.
Being Dutch, I nearly wrote a post on the House of Orange, but I got tired and copped out.
See, now this is why as a Dutch person I'm a not-so-secret Irish girl, although I'm definitely Catholic.
One well placed question and I got one cool story from the Brit.
Himself told me all about the Fraternal order and the Orange Lodgey stuff.
Cool!
I knew that there was something Ulster-like about you!!
Very interesting information.
You're my enemy then!!! OOHHHH NOOOOOOOO! I'll never be able to read your blog ever again!!!!
ahahahaha
(good take on orange!)
Peace
well i surely did not know that... thanks for the lesson!
smiles, bee
I was going to post on this but I didn't have the energy to look up the stats. My dad's family was of German or Austrian descent; my mother was English and French. But my dad always had me wear orange on St. Patrick's day!
That's cool...I never knew.
wow, I didn't know that!!
